3.4 Adaptive and Assistive Technology
Candidates facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student learning needs. (PSC 3.4/ISTE 3d)
The Assistive Technology implementation plan that I developed serves as the artifact for this standard. By completing this assignment I was able to facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support the individual student learning needs of a fourth grade student. The implementation plan was created to help me think about the many resources and assistive technologies that were necessary for a particular student. This guide required me to select a student who had modifications that needed assistive technologies, determine what equipment was needed, who was providing the equipment, and when the equipment was needed.
Standard 3.4, Adaptive and Assistive Technology establishes the expectation for candidates to facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual student learning needs. Throughout the process I was able to help the student by facilitating the use of adaptive technologies to support the student. The student had weak motor skills which made it hard for him to write which impacted his handwriting. He also got very frustrated when he would run out of time. By locating and providing the student with his own personal laptop the student was able to utilize a word processor to improve his writing abilities. Creating a plan to help the student become familiar with the computer, from the keyboard and word processor to the speech to text feature, was beneficial when the student was first starting to use the assistive technology. Ultimately, my ability to facilitate the use of adaptive and assistive technologies to support individual learning needs was vital to the success of this student.
Through completing this artifact I was able to see this student grow in his confidence and as a writer due to the assistive technology that he was provided. The artifact also helped me to understand the importance of adaptive and assistive technologies for students with disabilities. To improve this artifact, I would like to provide this student with digital graphic organizers so that he could plan his writing more effectively.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted student learning. Without the assistance of the modifications provided for the student, he would not have been able to keep up with the pace of the other students. Reviewing the pre and post writing samples and scores assesses the impact that this artifact had on the student.
