3.7 Communication & Collaboration
Candidates utilize digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. (PSC 3.7/ISTE 3g)
The artifact that supports Standard 3.7, Communication & Collaboration, is my class blog through Class Dojo which is a classroom management and communication tool. Recently Class Dojo introduced a feature called Class Story which is basically a blog that allows parents and students to view, like, and comment on your blog posts. I am also the administrator of Norton Parks School Story which allows me to post information to all the parents who use Class Dojo at our school. Updates, resources, and pictures are frequently sent to parents and students.
Standard 3.7 establishes the expectation for candidates to use digital communication and collaboration tools to communicate locally and globally with students, parents, peers, and the larger community. The blog has allowed me the opportunity to use digital communication with students and parents though posting about school events and educational resources. Parents and students can also personally message the teacher which allows for individual questions or concerns to be answered or resolved. The blog also updates the parents on what students are learning which allows for parents to become more involved in their child’s education. Additionally, the Class Dojo app allows for communication across a variety of devices and incorporates notifications when new posts are added which keeps parents and students promptly informed. Students and parents can use these communication and collaboration tools locally and globally.
Frequently communicating and collaborating with parents and students is something that I have learned is a critical element of running an effective classroom and school. Using web tools such as Class Dojo has been such an asset to my classroom and I do not know how teachers taught without these tools in the past. Being connected to your parents and students through technology has increased the amount of communication and collaborating I have done with students and parents since I started teaching. Though using this tool is great, I would like to eventually create a webpage that can host educational resources and videos for students and parents.
The blog has definitely impacted student and parent involvement which has ultimately impacted student achievement. When families and students are informed and aware of classroom information and happenings, their involvement tends to increase. This impact can be assessed by the amount of parents who view the blog posts and use the tool for communication.
