3.2 Managing Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates effectively manage digital tools and resources within the context of student learning experiences. (PSC 3.2/ISTE 3b)
The ISTE Lesson Plan Project was created for the course Internet Tools in the Classroom. The assignment tasked students to develop and implement a lesson plan that utilized a least three Web 2.0 tools. The lesson plan that I created was focused on Fourth Grade Georgia Performance Science Standards about weather prediction and instruments. Using the NETS-S lesson plan template also required for student technology standards to be addressed. The lesson plan that I developed incorporated Web 2.0 tools such as iMovie, Loopster, Prezi, and Keynote.
Designing and implementing the ISTE Lesson Plan Project demonstrates my ability to manage digital tools and resources effectively. Selecting digital resources that would further enhance the learning experiences of students was a challenge but in the end was an effective way to make the lesson more authentic. By having students create a weather script and then using Web 2.0 tools to record and edit their work lets students experience what an actual meteorologist does. Using these editing tools is very unfamiliar to fourth graders and I had to overcome many challenges with helping them to manage these digital tools. However, with a significant amount of modeling and facilitation, students were able to use these tools effectively.
Through creating the ISTE Lesson Plan I learned many things especially about how to select and help students use digital tools and resources to create meaningful learning experiences. Though this lesson was a great success I would change some things. Throughout the lesson students were given a wide variety of tools to use in order to help them succeed. This became more difficult to manage and many groups of students were using different tools. This made it hard to facilitate whole group lessons on how to use the tools and ended up with me training several groups on several Web 2.0 tools. This made it harder for me to focus on teaching the content standards as I was always mainly focused on the technology standards.
Overall, the ISTE Lesson Plan Project was a success and there was a positive impact on student achievement. The final products showcased student mastery of the standards and the students expressed how engaged they were during the project. I would like to continue to improve this lesson and add more components in the future to make it an even better learning experience.
