3.6 Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)
The Evaluating Emerging Technologies Project was used to evaluate the use of TED-Ed and the flipped classroom, an inverted classroom that delivers instruction outside of the classroom and moves homework inside. I researched the many benefits of using a flipped classroom to gain insight into the possibilities for improving the learning environment and how TED-Ed could be incorporated into the flipped classroom model. I developed a Prezi to present the information to teachers and administration.
Standard 3.6, Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools and Resources, establishes the requirement for candidates to collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. This artifact demonstrates my ability to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure through the detailed presentation on the technology. More and more technology is being used at Norton Park and many teachers have been talking about flipped classrooms but were unsure how to effectively implement the model. After collaborating with teachers and administration we researched the benefits and potential issues of creating a flipped classroom. I also introduced TED-Ed to the teachers and administration as a tool to easily create flipped lessons. Introducing TED-Ed provides an accurate way to flip a lesson and monitor student’s activity and achievement. Utilizing the flipped classroom is compatible with our schools technology infrastructure and technology vision and plan.
The creation of this artifact was one of the first times that I had considered the process that goes into evaluating and recommending a tool to be adopted by others. I learned that conducting an immense amount of research on the model and tools that you suggest is an important step to determine if it is worth adopting. Though I mainly focused on TED-Ed as a tool to use for the flipped classroom I wish I would have gone deeper into other tools that could be used to help teachers flip their classrooms. Presenting and evaluating a variety of options would have been more beneficial.
The work that went into creating this artifact impacted both students and staff members at Norton Park Elementary school. The impact could be assessed by the positive feedback I received from teachers and what their students said about their using the flipped classroom model.
