4.2 Safe, Healthy, Legal & Ethical Use
Candidates model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. (PSC 4.2/ISTE 5b)
The copyright and fair use presentation and the Internet Safety blog post serves as the artifacts for standard 4.2. The presentation was created to explain copyright and fair use as something that could be presented to fellow teachers as a as a reference or a review. The presentation covers a description of both copyright and fair use and scenarios for determining copyright and fair use violations. This artifact was created for ITEC 7745, Multimedia and Web design. The blog post on Internet safety was created to inform students and parents on the importance of digital citizenship and was created for ITEC 7430, Internet Tools in the Classroom.
Standard 4.2, Safe, Healthy, Legal, & Ethical Use, establishes the expectations for modeling and facilitating the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical use of digital information technologies. By deeply researching the copyright and fair use laws I have a firm understanding which allows me to model and facilitate the safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of digital information. I was able to model and facilitate how to legally use and post information and material. I also modeled and facilitated the legal and ethical use of information by meeting with teachers to discuss and answer questions about copyright or fair use. My students benefited from my study of copyright, fair use, and the Creative Commons where I was able to model and facilitate safe, healthy, legal, and ethical uses of information. I also wrote the Internet Safety Blog to inform parents and teachers about ways to ensure students safety while using the Internet. The post contains resources such as the “Safe Online Surfing Internet Challenge” to familiarize students with digital literacy and citizenship. It also mentions how teachers must involve and educate parents on the importance of monitoring and educating their children about good digital citizenship. The blog post demonstrates my ability to promote the safe and healthy use of technology.
Completing these assignments has cleared up the misconceptions I had about copyright and fair use and gave me a better understanding on how to educate teachers, students and parents about the safe, healthy, legal and ethical uses of digital information and technologies. Through my research, I feel more confident in assisting teachers and have learned strategies to help students learn how to use digital information safely and healthy. Though this presentation is mainly for teacher use I think it would be beneficial to create a similar presentation that was more student focused and could be presented to the student body at the beginning of the year. This would serve a reminder for all staff and their students to use digital information in a safe, healthy, legal and ethical way.
This presentation impacted faculty development as it was shared with the staff in a faculty meeting. By teachers using what they learned to model and facilitate the appropriate use of digital information and technologies it has also impacted student improvement. The impact of the artifacts can be assessed by surveying teachers on their knowledge of copyright, fair use, and digital citizenship as well as their consideration for the future use of these concepts.
