1.3 Policies, Procedures, Programs & Funding
Candidates research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school, district, state, and federal technology plans and guidelines. Funding strategies may include the development, submission, and evaluation of formal grant proposals. (PSC 1.3/ISTE 1c)
The Technology Grant Proposal was developed to support Standard 1.3, Policies, Procedures, Programs and Funding. I researched and wrote a grant proposal which sought to bridge any gaps in technology that Norton Park Elementary School has. The grant outlines instructional objectives and how they will be met, a timeframe, persons involved, a budget, and a plan for professional learning and evaluation.
Standard 1.3 allows candidates to research, recommend and implement policies, procedures, programs and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school, district, state, and federal technology plans and guidelines. After researching various grant opportunities I found the Ford Foundation and developed a grant proposal for a class set of Chromebooks. Through my research I found that Chromebooks are an affordable technology and it is mostly run through Googles cloud service. Chromebooks also offer many free tools that are educational and allow students to collaborate. Policies and procedures for the intended use of the technology were detailed in the proposal including instructional practices, professional workshops and an evaluation plan. Writing the grant demonstrates my ability to align instructional priorities with the technologies needed by my school in order to support the implementation of the shared vision. If provided the Chromebooks I would allow for one grade level to have access to the technology. Teachers who would be using the Chromebooks would go through a training on how to use and care for them and would be given professional development on how to effectively incorporate them into their classroom. We would also review how to use the features of a Chromebook to enhance student engagement and collaboration.
Applying for funding allowed me to examine the shared vision and submit a grant proposal to gain more technology for the school. Developing the Technology Grant Proposal has taught me to seek and pursue other grant opportunities to help support technology integration for teaching, learning, and assessment. Researching and applying for grants is a time consuming task. Finding a group of teachers who are willing to help research, write, and submit grants would be a beneficial practice for any school.
Though the grant I submitted was not funded, I have gained the knowledge on how to write a well-developed proposal that has potential to impact student learning and faculty development. The impact could have been assessed by frequently checking in on how teachers are incorporating the Chromebooks into their classrooms. I could then find areas for improvement and offer suggestions on how to better integrate the technology and coach them through that process.
