1.2 Strategic Planning
Candidates facilitate the design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. (PSC 1.2/ISTE 1b)
Through the completion of the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) Analysis I was challenged to evaluate ISTE’s eight Essential Conditions to identify available technologies and how they are being used in the school. This analysis contains an evaluation on the available technology resources and how they are used to instruct students. It also provides recommendations for improvement.
Standard 1.2 establishes the expectations for design, development, implementation, communication, and evaluation of technology-infused strategic plans. In order to develop a strategic plan for improvement I had to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats related to instructional technology. I collaborated and communicated with administrators and the leadership team to help evaluate each area and then determined the next steps for improvement. Then we collaboratively used the SWOT analysis to implement the start of a technology committee which would meet bi-weekly and plan professional learning opportunities.
Completing the SWOT Analysis was a meaningful learning experience that taught me how to assess the technology gaps that are present in my school. It gave me the opportunity to analyze the strengths and weaknesses and then determine different ways to address the weaknesses. I believe that involving more teachers in this process would be beneficial and help them become more invested in technology integration and the school improvement process.
The SWOT analysis is a very important step in strategic planning. By collaboratively analyzing the current realities related to technology a team was created in order to use the information to evaluate strengths and weaknesses and make a plan for school improvement. The SWOT analysis became a tool that was used to develop the School Strategic Plan. With the creation of the technology team a plan for technology related professional developments was implemented which will have an impact on student learning. The impact can be assessed through student growth on formative and summative assessments.
