2.7 Assessment
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments to measure student learning and technology literacy, including the use of digital assessment tools and resources. (PSC 2.7/ISTE 2g)
This artifact for standard 2.7 was developed in ITEC 7305, Data Analysis and School Improvement, where I conducted a Data Inventory for Norton Park Elementary School. The Data Inventory compiled all the different types of student-level data that Norton Park has collected. The layout of the Data Inventory included the data source name, content area, the dates of collection for each source, the grade level of the students being assessed, accessibility, the current use of data, and the most effective way that the data can be used.
The Data Inventory exhibits an understanding and mastery of Standard 2.7 because it offers a widespread list of assessments and data that are being collected at Norton Park Elementary School. While completing the data inventory I reviewed reading data collected from the Scholastic Reading Inventory and Developmental Reading Assessment and math data collected from the Scholastic Math Inventory and quarterly pre and post assessments. Additionally, I reviewed Georgia Milestone End of Grade Assessment Data. This data can be used to determine the effectiveness of each area being addressed and can help to make predictions on how to better those areas in need of attention. Because this Inventory includes the current uses of the data being collected we can move forward with an understanding of what is best working for the student body and what needs to be improved. Having a deep understanding of the available data resources, the ways in which they are currently being used, and their potential uses is an essential step in moving forward with meaningful assessment and growth.
Through designing and implementing this assignment I learned the many types of data being used to assess student growth and achievement at Norton Park Elementary. Additionally, I learned more about how the data being collected is currently being used and the ways in which it could be used more effectively. This assignment allowed me the opportunity to learn how to organize multiple sources of data into an effective and easy to understand format. I believe that the data collected will help me in my future assessments and will aid me in determining which areas my students are struggling with and which areas they are excelling. One thing I would have done differently would be to start the assessment earlier in the school year and to compare the collected data to the previous school year as well as to other schools in my area. In doing so I would be able to take a closer look at what has best worked in the past and what other schools might be doing differently to achieve better success.
Due to the Data Inventory being comprised of both frequently utilized data sources and infrequently used data sources I was able to tell that many of the lesser-used resources can actually provide valuable information to teachers. By carefully pouring over the data with other teachers in my grade level as well as with administration we have begun to make changes in order to reach students with all different types of learning needs. I know that by continuing to use this data inventory chart I will be able to more effectively meet the needs of my students. This impact can be assessed by the change that it creates in the future. As these ideas are presented to administrators and lead teachers, change will occur for the improvement of our school.
