3.1 Classroom Management & Collaborative Learning
Candidates model and facilitate effective classroom management and collaborative learning strategies to maximize teacher and student use of digital tools and resources. (PSC 3.1/ISTE 3a)
The Multimedia Design Project was created for the Multimedia and Web Design course. I designed an instructional WebQuest that’s purpose was to engage students though technology integration in an authentic and student-centered way. I used the WebQuest lesson structure to design a lesson on Georgia Performance Science Standards focusing on force and motion. By using the WebQuest as a strategy to engage and organize students it helps them collaborate in an effective manner making classroom management easier.
Throughout the WebQuest students are asked to complete a series of tasks. By using the WebQuest I was able to effectively demonstrate my ability to model and facilitate effective classroom management. The WebQuest easily guides students though the tasks they need to complete and allows them to self-manage their progress towards completion of the assignments. Through the project students are engage through interactive games and other web tools that also helps keep them on task. The varying learning styles of the students are also meet by providing students auditory, visual, and kinesthetic ways to learn the concepts. This keeps them focused and allows them to learn in the ways that is most suitable to their individual needs.
The WebQuest also allows students to be highly collaborative. By creating an authentic component to go along with the WebQuest students were able to work together to physically build their own roller coasters creating a strong collaborative environment. Embedding this task into the WebQuest demonstrates my ability to model and facilitate effective collaborative learning strategies to create a well-managed student-centered learning experience.
This was the first experience I had in developing a WebQuest. I learned how to structure a WebQuest to create a student-centered and authentic learning experience that is highly engaging. However, looking back on this experience I wish that I had embedded tools within the WebQuest where students could submit their assignments to help the management of submitting assignments. I also think I could have added a few more web tools where students could record the data they took from their rollercoasters.
After implementing the WebQuest with my students I was able to share the WebQuest with other teachers. I believe that this WebQuest has been a model for other teachers and has introduced them to new avenues of teaching and learning. It also allowed the chance for many students to complete the WebQuest and through teacher observation I was able to see that the learning experiences were successful. Teachers also expressed the success of the WebQuest and how it was a helpful teaching tool.
