2.6 Instructional Design
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of research-based best practices in instructional design when designing and developing digital tools, resources, and technology-enhanced learning experiences. (PSC 2.6/ISTE 2f)
The online learning design plan serves as the artifact for standard 2.6, instructional design. The course was designed for 4th grade students using the Common Core Math Standards. The course was designed in the learning management system Schoology and was implemented with students in the Fall of 2015. The online learning experience design grid outlines the courses standards, objectives, digital resources, performance tasks, and assessments.
Throughout the design of my course I utilized many different research-based practices. Through designing this course I was able to use digital tools to scaffold learning experiences. By having the students complete several brief assignments using technology they were better able to master the content before using digital tools and resources to complete an overarching authentic task which allowed for students to connect the math concepts learned to the world around them. Taking the time to effectively plan the math unit demonstrates my ability to model and facilitate the instructional design of a blended course. These practices created learning opportunities that created a higher leveled learning experience in order to help students become effective problem solvers and decision makers. Effectively using research-based practices to design an online course shows my ability to design instruction.
I learned a lot through meticulously planning and designing the online course. Creating the artifact help guide me through the steps of designing an effective online course which incorporates effective instructional strategies. Through completing the task I found a better of understanding on the important components of a technology-enriched unit, especially in an online setting. To better the online learning design plan I would like to incorporate more performance tasks that incorporate a wider variety of digital tools.
This experience has shaped how I plan a technology-enriched lesson in an online classroom and a face-to-face classroom. I have gained a clearer understating on how to become more of an effective facilitator of the learning experience. After looking at student achievement data I was able to see that they made many gains on summative and formative assessments.
