2.1 Content Standards & Student Technology Standards
Candidates model and facilitate the design and implementation of technology-enhanced learning experiences aligned with student content standards and student technology standards. (PSC 2.1/ISTE 2a)
For standard 2.1 I created a blended learning course that I implemented with my class of fourth grade students at Norton Park Elementary School. The course was designed and built over several weeks and was implemented in the Fall of 2015. The hybrid course addressed fourth grade Common Core math standards and was built using the Schoology learning management system.
This course was created to simultaneously align with the content standards and the student technology standards specific to what is expected of a fourth grade classroom. I developed this course over several weeks with meticulous detail being given to aligning fourth grade math content standards to student technology standards. By carefully modeling and facilitating the design of the blended learning course I was able to create a technology enhanced learning experience that would ensure the mastery of both the content and technology standard.
Through implementation, students were given information in both an online setting and through face-to-face instruction. Through the use of the learning management system Schoology students were presented with tasks that aligned to the content standards while simultaneously integrating the technology standards. By meeting in a face-to-face environment I was able to facilitate the needs of students based upon their individual learning styles.
Through the development of this project and the completion of this course I have been impacted in a way that has allowed me better myself as an instructor and as a student. I learned a great deal about aligning both the content and technology standards in order to provide powerful learning experiences for my students. This was my first experience creating an online blended course in which I purposefully aligned both standards. Next time I plan on incorporating fewer technology standards in order to set more of a focus on certain standards.
By integrating both the content standards and the technology standards I was able to see gains in student achievement as evidenced through student work samples and student assessment data.
