2.3 Authentic Learning
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to engage students in authentic learning experiences. (PSC 2.3/ISTE 2c)
The Engaged Learning Project serves as the artifact for standard 2.3, Authentic Learning. The Engaged Learning project uses technology to facilitate a real life learning experience. The project was designed for fourth grade students and required them to create and model a business with regards to all components. Students were tasked to use their business in order to raise money for a charity of their choice. The task addresses fourth grade Social Studies Georgia Performance Standards and Student Technology Standards.
I was able to engage students in an authentic learning experience by having them create their own business to raise money for a local charity of their choice. In doing so students were able to simulate a real life experience that would benefit the community. The motivational challenge encourages and increases student engagement resulting in a more meaningful learning experience. Through the modeling and facilitation of this task I was able to incorporate digital tools and resources into my design, which helped break down the walls of the classroom and reach people in the community in order to support their businesses and ultimately a local charity.
This was my first project in the program and it immediately taught me the importance of creating authentic learning experiences for students. I also learned that integrating technology with authentic learning creates a very powerful learning experience for students. Having students connect with the real world is important to developing 21st century learners. In order to extend the learning process I would purposefully integrate more content standards into the project in order for a higher level of learning to occur.
The impact of student learning spanned throughout the classroom, school, and the community. Teachers, administrators, parents, and community members all took part in the creation and implementation of each student’s project. Learning experiences were assessed through observations and student work samples, which served to prove a positive impact was made on student achievement.
