4.3 Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness
Candidates model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. (PSC 4.3/ISTE 5c)
The artifact that supports Standard 4.3, Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness, is the Digital Equity Blog that I wrote and posted in ITEC 7430. The blog mentions how differentiation, and the use of technology, plays an important role in teachers’ ability to appropriately and effectively educate a diverse population. The post also describes the importance of digital equality and how the equal access of tools is important for students to experience global awareness and gain a better understanding of various cultures.
Standard 4.3, Diversity, Cultural Understanding & Global Awareness, establishes the expectation to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness. Through my study of diversity in education I am able to model and facilitate the use of digital tools to support diverse student needs through my instruction. By incorporating things such as web tools, virtual field trips, and blogging into the classroom, teachers can enhance cultural understanding and increase global awareness. Such tools allow students to connect and collaborate to other students and cultures around the globe. The strategies discussed in this blog post, as well as the appropriate use of differentiation, will allow teachers to prepare their students for the diverse world that they live in. My knowledge of how implementing technology into the classroom can impact student learning strengthens my ability to successfully model and facilitate digital tools in the classroom to support diverse student needs, enhance cultural understanding, and increase global awareness.
The blog entry has taught me the importance of planning lessons that incorporate cultural understanding, global awareness, and diversity. Integrating technology has only made this task easier over the past several years and is increasingly getting better through new technologies such as virtual reality. It has allowed for students to go outside of their classroom and explore and collaborate with the world. By completing this assignment, I have better incorporated tasks that require students to collaborate with others outside of the classroom which hopefully have an impact in their communities. I hope to further be able to model this by helping other teachers incorporate diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness in their classrooms and collaboratively plan lessons and projects with the rest of the staff at Norton Park Elementary.
The work that went into the development of this artifact will ultimately impact student learning about the diversity of the world around them and it has also improved my development as a teacher of diverse learners. By surveying students on diversity, cultural understanding, and global awareness as well as observing how students interact with others globally and locally teachers can assess the impact. This could help guide future instruction and research in regards to diversity, cultural understanding and global awareness.
