5.1 Needs Assessment
Candidates conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. (PSC 5.1/ISTE 4a)
The artifact chosen to demonstrate my mastery of standard 5.1 is my individual teacher technology assessment. The individual teacher technology assessment was an artifact created to assess the needs of a fellow faculty member before I created a plan on action to assist her with technology integration in her classroom. I began by having the teacher complete the adopter survey, which asked her about her current classroom, openness to trying new things, and how long it takes her to jump on board new technology ideas. Next, I had her take a LoTi survey to determine her level of technology integration and then assessed the needs of her classroom as it related to technology integration. We then discussed and created a plan in order to help her implement technology into her classroom. The artifact was a needs assessment of an individual teacher.
Standard 1.2, Needs Assessment, establishes the expectations for candidates to conduct needs assessments to determine school-wide, faculty, grade-level, and subject area strengths and weaknesses to inform the content and delivery of technology-based professional learning programs. This artifact demonstrates my ability to conduct a needs assessment to determine faculty strengths and weaknesses. By creating and administrating a survey to determine teachers Level of Technology Integration I was able to assess the needs of the teachers in order to inform future coaching and professional learning opportunities. Moreover, another survey was administered to determine the teacher’s willingness to adopt new technologies which helped to provide a clearer picture of technology use and willingness to try new technologies. Conducting these assessments demonstrates my ability to determine the needs of the teachers and the school when it comes to technology related professional development.
Completing this artifact has showed me the importance of conducting a needs assessment prior to selecting an intervention strategy. Without the knowledge of what needs to be changed, it is impossible to make an informed decision or strategy for change. Conducting needs assessments helps determine strengths and weaknesses which is important when determining technology-based professional learning programs to implement. After conducting the surveys I wanted to add a few more questions to provide a clearer picture of the teachers needs and also use a post survey to determine the effectiveness of the coaching.
This artifact impacted faculty development by determine individual needs and then providing coaching to a teacher based on her needs. Overall this helped the teacher grow professionally and improved her teaching practices. The impact could be assess through observing how the teacher continues to integrate technology into the classroom.
