2.8 Data Analysis
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of digital tools and resources to systematically collect and analyze student achievement data, interpret results, communicate findings, and implement appropriate interventions to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning. (ISTE 2h)
The Data Overview was created to identify my school’s strengths, weaknesses, and achievement gaps based on Georgia Milestones End of Grade Assessment scores. I collected local, district, and state data and explained the meaningful comparisons between them. I used Excel to create easy to understand graphs to analyze, interpret, and communicate my findings in a presentation geared toward my school’s staff. This data could be used to develop an action plan to implement positive change in the school. I then recorded the presentation.
Standard 2.8, Data Analysis, establishes the expectation for candidates to demonstrate the ability to model and facilitate the use of digital tools and resources to collect, analyze, and interpret student achievement data, communicate the findings, and implement appropriate interventions to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning. Throughout this artifact, I demonstrate my ability to collect and analyze data by using the Georgia’s Department of Student Achievement website to locate the necessary data in order to drill down and find trends. I then was able to use digital tools to create a presentation that would communicate my findings to the school faculty. The presentation shows my ability to create charts, tables, and graphs to represent the information in a visually appealing, meaningful, and concise manner. It also demonstrates my ability to communicate and interpret the data that I collected and its relevance to the school improvement plan.
Deeply digging in to the data at my school allowed me to see school wide strengths and weaknesses which helped me gain a better understanding of the schools achievement and student learning. I was able to discover many trends and consistencies that have never been discussed with the faculty. From completing this presentation I have become a more effective member of my school and can use the knowledge I gained to help strategically plan. I believe that this artifact could have been improved by incorporating data for the lower grades in order to further see the strengths and weakness over a longer span of time.
By sharing the data overview with my colleagues I was able to impact faculty development. Sparking a conversation was a very important aspect of this artifact and from the discussion we were able to discuss strategies and a potential plan to improve scores. The impact of this presentation can be assessed through the use of the data when developing the school strategic or improvement plans.
